Key Benefits

Protecting Profits, Preserving Farming

Farmers are facing declining incomes, with future net farm earnings projected to drop further due to rising costs, tariffs, and evolving policies. By installing agrivoltaic systems, farmers can generate additional revenue while continuing to cultivate their crops and maintain the operations they love.

Precision Light, Maximum Growth

TSO Green’s advanced software sets our technology apart from traditional raised solar installations. Farmers have the ability to adjust panel angles to deliver the ideal Daily Light Integral (DLI) for each type of crop, giving plants the exact amount of light they need to thrive. Engineered for maximum shade tolerance, the system uses automated shade control to balance sunlight and protection, ensuring optimal conditions for photosynthesis. This reduces crop stress, prevents sun bleaching, and minimizes other light-related issues. By creating the right growing environment, farmers can sometimes extend the season and time their harvests to meet market demand. At the same time, the solar energy produced can power on-site farm operations or be sold to provide a valuable additional source of income.

Precision Light, Maximum Growth

Elevated panels improve worker retention by transforming the harvest environment into a safer and more comfortable space. Instead of working under direct, intense sun, farmworkers benefit from consistent shade provided by TSO’s solar blades, which can fully cover fields during peak heat. Optional misters and fans add an extra layer of cooling relief, reducing the risks of heat stress and fatigue. These improvements not only make harvesting more enjoyable and productive, but also demonstrate care for worker well-being. When employees feel protected, valued, and supported, they are more likely to return season after season, ensuring farms have a reliable, experienced workforce.

Precision Light, Maximum Growth

Shade created by agrivoltaic systems can significantly improve soil health by creating a more stable environment for microorganisms and essential soil processes. By moderating temperature and retaining moisture, shade helps the soil remain rich in nutrients and less vulnerable to stress. Finding the optimal shade balance can also reduce foliar diseases and support overall plant health.

TSO Green’s system incorporates a corrugated polycarbonate layer that manages rainfall more effectively. Instead of allowing heavy rain to wash away vital nutrients, this layer directs water to designated areas, reducing leaching and protecting the soil from losing essential elements such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. As a result, farmers can maintain a healthier soil pH and avoid the acidification that often comes from nutrient loss. The same layer also shields crops from hail damage, lowering plant mortality and preventing excess organic matter decomposition that can disrupt soil acidity.

In addition, our system can be paired with customized irrigation solutions. Controlled irrigation prevents excess water from seeping deep into the ground and carrying nutrients away, another common cause of soil acidification. With proper water management, crops benefit from improved nutrient availability and a more balanced growing environment.

Shade also reduces the erosive impact of rainfall and wind, helping preserve soil structure and prevent nutrient runoff. By regulating soil temperature, shade fosters healthy microbial activity and balanced organic matter decomposition, both of which enhance nutrient cycling and buffer against rapid pH shifts. Finally, by conserving water and keeping soil moist for longer periods, shade reduces drought stress, ensuring a more resilient farming system.

Balancing Sun and Shade for Thriving Pollinators

Pollinators are essential to crop production, yet not all species thrive under the same conditions. While many prefer full sun, certain bees, butterflies, and moths such as the hummingbird sphinx moth are more active in shaded environments. Studies consistently show that healthy pollinator activity improves fruit set and yield, but traditional crop covers can sometimes disrupt pollinator populations and reduce biodiversity.

Shade within agrivoltaic systems provides important ecological benefits. Extreme heat can limit pollinator foraging activity and increase mortality rates, placing stress on both the insects and the crops that depend on them. By offering cooler, shaded areas, agrivoltaics create refuges where pollinators can continue to thrive even during the hottest parts of the day. This extended foraging opportunity also helps lengthen the harvest season, providing food sources for pollinators at times when they are typically scarce.

With TSO Green’s approach, farmers gain the best of both worlds. Sun loving pollinators and shade preferring species work together to support healthier crops, stronger yields, and more resilient ecosystems.

Water Preservation

Water scarcity is one of the greatest challenges facing global agriculture. According to the World Resources Institute, one quarter of the world’s crops are grown in regions where water supplies are highly stressed or unreliable. In the United States, nearly 70 percent of the land is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse. Despite these challenges, farmers and ranchers in drought-stricken areas continue to produce more than 80 percent of the nation’s fruits, nuts, and vegetables, over 80 percent of its wheat, more than half of its dairy, and over 70 percent of its beef. Globally, irrigated crops account for 34 percent of production by weight, yet they are increasingly vulnerable to competition for shared water resources. Water stress is defined as “high” when at least 40 percent of local water supplies are consumed by agriculture, industry, energy production, and households.

TSO Green’s agrivoltaic systems directly address this challenge by conserving water through shading. Shade reduces direct sunlight on crops and soil, slowing the evaporation process and allowing water to remain in the soil longer. Cooler shaded areas further reduce heat-driven evaporation, ensuring that water is used more efficiently.

By maintaining soil moisture, shade lessens the need for frequent irrigation and helps crops withstand periods of drought. This is especially valuable in hotter climates and in regions already under persistent water stress. With improved water retention and reduced evaporation, TSO Green provides farmers with a more resilient and sustainable approach to growing food in a future where every drop of water matters.

Growing Biodiversity: The Ecological Advantage of Shade Farming

Biodiversity is a foundation of resilient farming systems, and agrivoltaics can play a key role in supporting it. With integrated DLI control, farmers are able to create a more stable environment where crops, soil, and surrounding ecosystems thrive together. Shade moderates soil temperature and reduces evaporation, conditions that support a greater diversity of microorganisms, invertebrates, and plants that prefer cooler and moister habitats. This improved balance fosters healthy soil ecosystems, which in turn strengthen plant growth and nutrient cycling.

Shaded microclimates provide additional habitats for insects, birds, mammals, and epiphytes. Pollinators and beneficial insects gain refuge from extreme heat, while birds and small mammals benefit from increased vegetation and food sources. Even soil organisms such as earthworms and fungi thrive under these conditions, enriching soil health and contributing to long term sustainability.

By diversifying the microhabitats within a farm, shade enhances ecosystem stability and strengthens natural food webs. This creates an agricultural environment where crop production is not isolated from nature but supported by it. With TSO Green’s agrivoltaic systems, farmers are not only improving yields and resource efficiency, they are also building healthier, more biodiverse ecosystems that increase resilience against pests, disease, and climate stress.
